Ligia Lewis
Deader than dead wurde 2020 von Ligia Lewis im Rahmen von Made in L.A. entwickelt, choreographiert und inszeniert. Die Performance sollte in den Hammer Museum Galleries aufgeführt werden, mussten aber auf Grund der Pandemie abgesagt werden. Eine Filmversion der Arbeit entstand im Anschluss und war in diversen Museen und Galerien zu sehen. Die Performance setzt an bei der Ironie und der emotionalen Distanz von «deadpan», einem ungerührten Gesichtsausdruck, der im Schauspiel oft als komischer Effekt eingesetzt wird. Ausgehend von der Idee von Reglosigkeit entwickelte Lewis eine Choreographie für zehn Tänzerinnen und Tänzer, deren Spiel ausdruckslos, «tot» bleibt und die sich so der Vereinnahmung durch eine Geschichte oder eine Figur widersetzen.
In der Pandemiezeit reduzierten sich der Cast auf vier Personen, und die Arbeit näherte sich traditionelleren Formen von Theater an. In dieser Filmversion finden die Tanzenden ihre Inspiration im letzten Monolog von Macbeth und arbeiten mit Modulen, die Themen wie Tod, Stillstand oder Leere umkreisen. Angesprochen werden das Spiel, Tragödie als ein vertrautes Moment Schwarzer Lebenswelten, Zeitlichkeiten und ihre Loops, und die Art, wie eine Berührung sowohl Fürsorge als auch Gewalt ausdrücken kann. Dabei fehlt auch nicht der Humor, die komödiantischen Effekte – so nimmt LIgia Lewis etwa das Konzept des «corpsing» auf, ein Theaterbegriff für einen unwillkürlichen Lachreflex, der im falschen Moment kommt. Der Film dokumentiert weniger die Interpretation eines Stücks als das Potential einer Performance.
Conceived, choreographed and directed by Ligia Lewis for Made in L.A. 2020, deader than dead was originally a performance planned for the Hammer Museum galleries that had to be postponed due to the pandemic. The piece eventually became a film, which has since been shown in various museums and galleries. The creation of the performance began with an investigation into the irony and emotional distance induced by the deadpan, a comically deployed impassive attitude. From this form of immobility, Lewis first developed a choreography for 10 dancers who remained expressively flat or dead, resisting any narrative or figurative hold. Following the pandemic, the cast was reduced to 4 performers and the performance moved towards a more traditionally theatrical presentation.
For this filmed version, the dancers are inspired by the final monologue of Macbeth and deploy a modular form in which each chapter illustrates death, stasis or emptiness. The performance is also a reflection on play, on familiarity with tragedy in black communities, on time and its loops, on touch as both an act of care and violence.Nevertheless, Ligia Lewis infuses her proposal with a good dose of humour and comedic springs, taking up the concept of corpsing - a theatrical term for involuntary laughter at a non-comical moment. The film does not so much document the interpretation of a play as the potential of a performance.

Ligia Lewis works as a choreographer and dancer. Through choreography and embodied practice, she develops expressive concepts that give form to movements, speech, affects, thoughts, relations, utterances, and the bodies that hold them. Her choreographic work slides between the familiar and the unfamiliar. Held together by the logic of interdependence, disorder, and play, she creates space(s) for the emergent and the indeterminate while tending to the mundane. In her work sonic and visual metaphors meet the body, materializing the enigmatic, the poetic, and the dissonant. Lewis’s work continues to evoke the nuances of embodiment.

About
Tracy September a.k.a. TRA is a South African musician, performer, DJ and music researcher based in Zürich, Switzerland. With influences of jazz, traditional Xhosa singing and electronic experimentation, tracy works around themes of memory, spirit and protest, with a particular passion for improvisation. For tracy improvisation is a way to surrender attachment to ideas and trust the capacity of one’s intuition. It is an invitation to let go. tracy uses her voice, electronics, texts, archive materials and field recordings, to tell stories that are deeply rooted in ritual, community and communion. Ritual as a transformative tool; community as the foundation for co-creation of existence; and communion as a means for intimate fellowship.
Outside of her solo projects, tracy makes music for film, theatre and dance pieces. She is a member of the band Black Pitch and is also a DJ playing under her pseudonym youngseptember playing experimental and contemporary music from Africa and the Diaspora.

Misery Party
«Du bist nicht zu sensibel – die Welt da draussen ist verrückt.» Misery ist eine in London ansässige Community für psychische Gesundheit, die von und für queere, trans- und intersexuelle Menschen mit Erfahrungen psychischer Probleme, Sucht, Behinderung, Trauma und Neurodivergenz geleitet wird.
Der Sober Day Rave erweitert die Möglichkeiten des «Nacht»-Lebens und bietet Bewegungsworkshops, Workshops zu Körperschmuck, Kunsttherapie, Heilungsräume und natürlich auch Tanz an. Die Veranstaltung ist für BIPoC Menschen kostenlos. Alle, die nicht der Community angehören, sind willkommen, werden aber gebeten, an der Tür einen finanziellen Beitrag (pay as you wish) zu leisten.
Misery schafft gemeinsam zugängliche Nüchternheitsräume, Dienstleistungen, Praktiken und Ressourcen, um Gemeinschaften der Fürsorge zu kultivieren, die die kollektive Heilung und Widerstandsfähigkeit von queeren, BIPoC Menschen unterstützen und fördern können.

Sober Day Rave with Misery Party. «You’re not too sensitive, it’s mad out here». Misery is a London-based playful mental health community led by and for queer, trans, intersex, people of colour with lived experience of mental health problems, madness, addiction, disability, trauma, & neurodivergence.
Expanding the possibilities of «night» life, the sober day rave will feature movement workshops, body adornment, art therapy, healing spaces and of course, dancing. This event is free for BIPoC. Those not from the community are welcome but will be asked to make a monetary contribution (pay as you wish) at the door.
Misery co-creates accessible sober spaces, services, practices and resources to cultivate communities of care that can support and sustain the collective healing and resilience of queer, trans, intersex Black, indigenous and people of colour.
The number of places for the workshops is limited, please register at info@gessnerallee.ch. The rule is: first come, first served. The event is free for BIPoC. All those who are not members of the community are welcome, but are asked to make a financial contribution (pay as you wish) at the door.

AUTHENTICALLY PLASTIC
As a DJ, producer, and art-making individual based in Kampala, Uganda, Authentically Plastic's sound is inevitably political. Dubbed the "Demon of the Nile" by conservative Ugandan media and politicians, Authentically Plastic has never shied away from breaking norms and expectations. Authentically Plastic hosts a roving, riotous club night in Kampala called ANTI-MASS, which creates space for female, queer, and experimental artists in an increasingly repressive social climate.
LEALA-RAIN
Born in the US to Nigerian parents, Leala-Rain is a London-based raver currently based in Kampala, Uganda. She is a resident DJ for the QTIPOC collective Misery and hosts their monthly radio show on Balamii. She can be heard at club nights in London as well as various online guest mixes and her other monthly radio shows on local Threads Radio in Tottenham.
soungou
Hailing from Zurich, soungou is excited to find his place in the nightly playground of music and partying. He runs a party series called FUBU and his style is best described as a mix of Latin and Afro-influenced club music. His ultimate goal is to create new biotopes for queer BIPoC. "It's about celebrating ourselves and being there for each other," says soungou.
Jean Foncé
Jean Foncé is a black:r, queer agender poet, DJ, and event organizer currently living in Basel. Jean's work centers on the lived experiences of Black, queer, and otherwise marginalized people. Jean understands writing and telling counter-narratives from the margins as a practice of resistance. In doing so, Jean emphasizes the importance of centering the voices of those who have historically spoken from this position.
